City Hall

The new city hall was dedicated in August 2002.

The new city hall houses all of the city departments including
the mayor's office. It also houses the council chambers and
various meeting rooms.

The East Grand Forks City Hall was designed with specific dimensions and attributes in mind to commerate the reconstruction of the city after the flood of 1997. Here are some of those details.

  1. Three flags and three steps in front of city hall signify the federal, state and local governments working together to make the recovery possible.
  2. The monument in front is a thank you to all people across the nation that helped us in our time of need. It is also a reminder to help others who are less fortunate. The heart shaped patio brick under the monument is a symbol of love.
  3. There are 54 columns in the construction of city hall to signify the height of the 1997 flood.
  4. The outside height of the building is 97 feet to signify the year of the flood.
  5. The height inside the rotunda is 54 feet to signify the level of the water in 1997.
  6. The height of the second floor is 14 feet, which signifies the normal level of the river.
  7. There is an east wing and a west wing to signify that communities on both the east and the west side of the river were affected by the flood.
